The share of Portsmouth pupils reaching grade 4 or above in GCSE English and maths rose to 55.9% in 2023/24, when entry to both subjects rose to 95.2% of the cohort. Entry then fell to 93.2% in 2024/25. Attainment improved in the one year published while the entry rate went the other way in the following year, and a smaller entered cohort can move an attainment share on its own, which is why these two readings do not settle a direction.
