The job market in Scotland has been weakening. The claimant count was 109,330 in March 2026, 108,525 in July and 112,215 in August 2026, each recorded as unfavourable against the usual pattern for its month, with payrolled employees at 2,432,038 in March and 2,457,505 in June, also unfavourable. Running the other way, payrolled employees was 2,449,528 in May 2026 and 2,455,508 in July, and the claimant count 108,120 in June, all favourable. The August count is the most recent and the highest, which is what tips the view.
A view is formed only where the evidence names a figure you can check. Each movement listed as a reason had to be large enough to matter and distinctive in at least one way — unusual against this area's own history, unusual against comparable areas, or sustained over several periods. A movement shared with peers counts for less, because it says something about the country rather than about Scotland. Where no figure supports a direction we hold no view rather than a hedged one.
